Reminder: Christmas Scavenger Hunt - Dec 3rd

Join us for our Christmas Scavenger Hunt Photo Walk downtown Moncton on Saturday, December 3rd. We will meet at the Tim Hortons, on the corner of Alma and Main Streets, at 9:00 am. Once we are all "coffeed up", we will be ready to leave by 9:15.

6 categories, with a Christmas theme will be announced that morning. We will have fourhours in downtown Moncton and surrounding area to take pictures of each of thesix categories selected.

Meet for lunch at1:30 pm at Subway downtown across from Tim Horton’s.

One week after theScavenger Hunt we would appreciate it if each participant would submit his orher best image from each category. We will advise whom this should be sent to inour next correspondence, as we would like to show them at the next meeting in aspecial way.

Note: There are no prizes, no giveaways, no winners, nothing like that. It’s just a friendly game of sharing andexperiencing the hunt together. It’s theexcitement of seeing what others come up with.

Book Launch by Local Photographer Craig Norris

Moncton based documentary photographer Craig Norris has extended all club members an invitation to the launch party for his first book, entitled "Three Sunrises: Evolve Twenty Eleven". The book is a photo documentary about the 2011 Evolve Music and Awareness Festival, held in Antigonish, NS.

The book launch will take place at the Aberdeen Cultural Center in Moncton, Dec.2nd, 7:30 to midnight. The evening will consist of a photo exhibit and musical performances by Ben Caplan, Jonah Haché, and DijiDale. The Sheepdogs, recently featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, may also be making making an appearance. (more info in the links below the photo)

Upcoming "Audience Participation" Assignments

We thought we would try something new with a couple of the assignments this year. We are calling them...

Audience Participation Assignments (APA)

We wanted to give you plenty of time to think about how to prepare for these. Here's how they will work:

The first APA theme is "Song Title", which will be due at our January 12th meeting. Your assignment is to shoot an image that, in your mind, portrays a popular song. As each image is being shown at the meeting, our members will try to "guess" which song the image was shot to represent. As an example, you might shoot a country road winding off into the distance to represent "The Long and Winding Road."

What will happen once the actual song title is revealed? Will our members guess the correct song or will there be different interpretations? Should be interesting and fun!

The second assignment is "Up Close and Far Away", which will be due on June 14th. With this one you will shoot 2 images of the same subject. The first one will be up close (macro) with the attempt to "mask" what the subject is. With this one, try to be artistic. Try to be abstract. From this first shot only, the members in the audience will try to "guess" what the subject is.

The second shot will be the "reveal" shot. Take a wide shot (far away) of your subject to identify what it is. Should be interesting to see if the members can guess correctly!

Sussex Balloon Festival Field Trip

Join us for a FCC field trip to the Sussex Balloon Festival this Saturday, Sept. 10th. We will be meeting to coordinate car-pooling at 1:40 at the School District 2 parking lot at the corner of St. George Blvd. and Wheeler. The car pool will leave at 2:00 to allow time to find parking and get familiar with the grounds.

Balloon launch is at 5:30 (weather permitting). The "Magic Night Balloon Glow" is set to start at 8:00.

Return time to Moncton is dependant on how long participants would like to stay. We suggest you bring a sweater.

CAPA "Individual" Competition

Focus Camera Club is a member club of CAPA. Any member who also wishes to join CAPA as an individual member can visit the CAPA site for more information.

East Vs. West: Gala Royale - September 17th

"East vs. West" is a unique photo competition coming from the creative mind of local photographer Nick Gaines. "EAST Vs. WEST" pits a group of photographers from the Eastern Canada against a group of photographers from Western Canada. 9 months in the making, the competition consisted of 16 photographers, 90+ models, 46 categories and scores of hair stylists and make-up artists. Attendees will be given a ballot to vote for their favorite 6 images.

Part of the Gala Royale at Casino NB, September 17th, the exhibit and competition kicks off at 4:00 pm. The evening will be a great opportunity for photography. Along with the "EAST Vs. WEST" photo competition, the party also consists of live entertainment and a fashion show on a 50' runway. Bring your cameras!

Nick Gaines and Georges Long will be at our season kick-off meeting on Sept. 8th with tickets. For every 15 general admission tickets purchase through the club, Gala Royale will upgrade one ticket to a VIP! See details in the poster below.

Outdoor Photography Workshop July 22, 23 & 24th

The organizers of the 2011 People’s Choice Photo Exhibit & Contest, held in conjunction with the Annual Sandpiper Festival and with the participation of the Nature Conservatory of Canada wish to offer an unique experience for photographers of all levels. There will be three short photography instruction sessions (approximate. 2.5 hours) offered followed by an opportunity to photograph migratory birds with the assistance of the staff at The Nature Conservancy of Canada at Johnson’s Mills, NB.

Focus Camera Club's very own Clarence Nowlan has offered to present three instructional sessions during which he will present many tips and guidelines on enhancing the quality of outdoor images.

The proposed schedule for the three (3) sessions:

1. July 22, 1300 hrs; Instruction session followed by practical photography at 1800 hrs.

2. July 23, 1400 hrs; Instruction session followed by practical photography at 1900 hrs.

3. July 24, 1500 hrs; Instruction session followed by practical photography at 1915 hrs.

There will be a charge of $10.00 per person per session. There is a limit of 10 seats per session based on a first come first served basis.

Annual Club Potluck Supper

The date for this year's potluck supper is Saturday, June 25th.

Location: Marcel Caissie's cottage in Gand Barachois (location details will be included in a private email)
Time: people can arrive anytime after 2:00pm - potluck supper will be around 6:00pm

The Focus Camera Club is proudly accepting entries for our annual Ken Dunphy Landscape Award. Images will be accepted at our June 9th meeting and the images and winner will be presented at our annual potluck on June 25th.

The Ken Dunphy Landscape Award was established in memory of Ken Dunphy by the membership of the Focus Camera Club. The award pays tribute to Ken's dedication to photography and family.

Details:
~ Each member can submit up to 3 images depicting "Landscapes". (Landscape Photography is the depiction of mountains, valleys, trees, rivers and forests. (Traditionally, landscape art depict the surface of the earth.)
~ Each image may be submitted in full resolution
~ The images will be judged by two of our esteemed senior members

June 4 Field Trip - Sackville and Area

Those who are interested in a full day on Saturday, June 4, meet at the Tim Horton's, Champlain Place at 8:00 am where we will be leaving for Sackville at 8:15 sharp. Once at Tim's, the ride arrangements can be made for the people who want to car pool.

Once in Sackville we will be going directly to the Waterfoul Park boardwalk. Lots of places to visit and photograph in the area depending on your interest: Mount A Campus, Swan Pond, Old Bridge, Old School, Down Town, Older Railway Station, Campbell Carriage Factory, Harness Shop, Covered Bridge, Fort Beausejour.

First-Ever Blog Photo Challenge!

We are very excited to announce our first-ever, monthly, Blog Photo Challenge! The theme for March is "GREEN" in honour of St. Paddy's Day. Submit images where green is the predominant colour. (Green should be easy to find this time of year, right?)

We have redesigned the FCC website with the goal of making it your NUMBER ONE resource for club information. There is lots to explore, but here is a quick overview of some of the most notable updates:

1. To show off the work of our members, we have added "Club Galleries" to the site. Now we need your photos! Please read here on how to submit photos for the galleries and send us your images. We have also included links to each members' individual websites. If you want your website added, please send us the link!

2. We have included a "Links/Resources Page", so you will have links to some of the most popular photo-tips sites and other popular resources. If you have a site to suggest, please email us the link and an explanation of why you like the site.

3. You can upload each new post to Facebook & Twitter. This will allow each of us to promote the club individually to friends and family. Also, from the icons in the sidebar, you can now link directly to both the FCC Facebook Group and Flickr Group from our website. We are suggesting we use the Facebook "discussion" group for things such as equipment for sale, photo-meet-ups, a place for questions/answers, and other interesting topics. Feel free to start a thread!

4. Introducing, Blog-only, monthly photo "Challenges" to help get you out shooting! The first one starts right away and the theme for March is "Green". Submit your photos taken during March with green as the predominant colour and will display them all in a slideshow on the site in April.

5. Expect regular updates. We intend to keep you informed! If you have news for the club, send us an email so we can post it to the site! We hope you come back often!

Please pardon our mess while we re-build the FCC website! Look for new and improved colours and format coming soon. (Note: The current look is only temporary) We will continue to improve the site over the next short while, with the goal of making it your NUMBER ONE resource for club information. While there are some modifications and reorganization still yet to come, we would like to draw your attention to the most recent updates:

1. We have added a number of "pages" to the site, most notably a "Club Galleries" page. Members will be able to submit photos for the galleries and they will be posted on a rotating basis. We are very excited about this and will be providing more information, including how you can submit your images, soon!

2. We have included a "Links/Resources Page", so you will have links to some of the most popular photo-tips sites and other popular resources. If you have a site to suggest, please email us the link and an explanation of why you like the site.

3. You will be able to post both the site and each post to Facebook & Twitter. This will allow each of us to promote the club individually to friends and family. FCC also has our own Facebook Group page and a Flickr Group page. You can now link directly to those pages from our website.

Good Evening Focus Camera Club members...

The time that we have all been waiting for has come. We will be starting our regular club meetings next Thurs Sept 16 in room D-102 in the Rémi-Rossignol Building on the U de M campus. Meeting time will be from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. This meeting we will introduce the club executive, committees and cover some general club business.

We know that everybody had a great summer so we would like you to bring in 3 of your favourite shots and share them with the club. This meeting will have images for view with some time for discussion by the photographer explaining why the subject that caught there eye.

I am looking forward to seeing every one and getting started on an exciting new season.

Mount A is looking for images for a multi-media presentation that will be presented October 17, 2008 @ 1pm (tentative time). They are looking for the following images:
-Abstracts or soft esoteric images utiliizing birds, crosses or sunrays
-Abstracts of various colours
-Sunrises & sunsets (no buildings or boats)
-Reflections in water
-Cloudscapes
I know everyone would have at least one image in their library that could be submitted.

Year-end Conference
As I presented, I would like to put on a day long conference with 4 presenters as keynote speakers. To make this work, it will take some long term planning, lining up sponsors, finding a venue, and recruiting volunteers among other things to make it all happen. If you would like to be part of the committee to make this happen, please send me an email.

If you have topics you would like to be discussed and presented at a meeting, please forward you topic ideas to me.

Image Evaluation

Scavenger Hunt Banquet
Anyone interested in attending the banquet for the Scavenger Hunt that took place in August, please forward me your names by Monday, September 15th. The dinner will take place at the Sussex Golf and Country Club, Sunday, September 21th from 1pm-5pm. The diner that will be served will be a turkey dinner with cheesecake (mmmmmm!) for dessert and will cost $20. If you are interested in attending but not eating, the cost will be $5.

As the last few days of summer holidays get closer, now is the time to start thinking about the upcoming Focus Camera Club season.

This year we have lots of new ideas that I think every member of the club will enjoy and hopefully spark more interest in the club and increase of current membership at the same time.

FIELD TRIP – On June 7th there will be a field trip to the Cambridge Narrows area. The trip will be led by Clarence Nowlan so you will not only have an opportunity to visit a very picturesque area but also the opportunity to consult with Clarence on all aspects of photography.

The group will gather at Tim Horton's on the corner of Mapleton Road and Plaza Blvd. At 7:30 AM. If you wish to car pool this will be the time.

The contest closes on June 10th, 2008, and winning entries will be published in The Beaver, as part of a special feature package on "The Photos that Changed Canada" — 10 photos that influenced the future of our nation. Entries can be submitted online to contest@historysociety.ca or by regular post, at The Beaver Photo Contest 478-167 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0T6. The Beaver cannot guarantee that submissions will be returned, so please only mail duplicate copies of your photograph(s).

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Eligibility
All photo entries must include Canadian content, and depict a "newsworthy" moment from Canada's past. A "newsworthy" photo is an original image of a significant event from Canadian History that would merit reporting in a newspaper or other news media. Entries will be judged both on their newsworthiness, as well as their composition and aesthetic qualities. Judging will be, by its very nature, subjective and dependent on the professional journalistic discretion of the judges. The contest is open to all residents of Canada, except for directors or employees of Canada's National History Society and/or their immediate families, cohabitants, agents or contractors. Entries are intended to come from the private photo collections of entrants, and not consist of previously published professional news photographs. Individuals may enter up to a maximum of three photographs, but can only win one prize.

Format
Entries may be submitted both digitally and in hard-copy format and can be in colour or black-and-white.

Electronic entires must be emailed as JPEG files, at 266 dpi and be no larger than 4MB in file size. Entries can also be burned onto a CD or DVD and mailed to The Beaver. While entrants are permitted to crop photos, and also correct the tonal or colour qualities of their entries, they are not permitted to digitally alter the content of the images.

Entries submitted in print form must be submitted unmounted, and can't be larger than 8" x 12" in size. The Beaver will also accept 35 mm colour slides and transparencies, but they must be mounted, and originals will be needed to reproduce in the magazine.

Entries and Identification
Entries are limited to three photos per entrant.

Each hard copy entry must have a fully completed entry form (photocopies acceptable) affixed with tape to the back of each photograph.

Emailed entries should be sure to submit each photo as a seperate email, with a completed entry form attached/pasted into the body of the email.

Publication
Winners' names and photographs will be published in a future issue of The Beaver and on TheBeaver.ca. The Beaver reserves the non-exclusive right to publish any entry in any or all magazines, websites and/or educational, promotional or other materials produced by the History Society. Model releases are the responsibility of the entrant and must be available in the event the photo is a winner.

Deadline
Mailed entries must be postmarked on or before June 10, 2008 and must be received by June 16, 2008. Hand-delivered entries must be received by 4:00 p.m. CST. Judging

Return of Entries
All original hardcopy entries (such as prints, colour slides, etc.) will be returned, provided the entrant includes a pre-paid return envelope with their entry/entries.

Responsibility
The Beaver cannot be held responsible for entries that ar lost, damaged, or delayed during transportation.

Contests for this meeting include “City Landscape” and “Free Study”.
Anyone submitting images needs to be at the university between 6.30 and 6.45 to give ample time to transfer images to the laptop, if you cannot make it by these times then the other choice will be to email your images to [focuscameraclub@gmail.com] by midnight May 14. Meeting well start at 7.00pm sharp; image transfers will cease at 6.55pm to allow for judging to be setup.

The Nomination Committee will present its report.

There will be an opportunity for a “Gear Swap” - Bring any equipment that you want to sell or loan and see if there is someone interested.

Night Outing – After the Gear Swap, we'll split into small groups and go out and have some fun on the city streets shooting whatever comes to mind (i.e. Eagles near the university; city landscapes or maybe street photography). We can then gather for coffee at 9.00 or 9.30pm.

Colour Correction Tutuorial

Step 1 — Where are the Problems?

Let's start off by examining the image for colour problems or "colour cast". In the sample image you might notice right off the bat that it has a generally blue colour cast. We can confirm the colour cast by examining our info palette. For this tutorial we will be looking at the LAB colour space to evaluate colour. Here you can find a quite and dirty example of how the space functions.

It separates the colour from the contrast — this makes it much easier to read the colours. The "L Channel" is the contrast of the image, it goes from black at 100, to white at 0. The "A Channel" goes from green to magenta, where green is a negative value and represents cool colour, and magenta is positive and represents warm colours. The "B Channel" goes from blue to yellow, where blue is negative and cool, and yellow is positive and warm. When both the A channel and the B channel are zero then it is greyscale. Refer to the picture below to see how to view the LAB colour read-out in your info palette.

Step 2 — Remove the Cast

Create a 'Curves' adjustment layer and target the Blue Channel. Click & hold with your mouse on the picture and watch how the bubble moves along the curve. This lets you know what area of the picture is related to which part on the curve. Since there is a blue cast we need to move the curve away from blue. This step is subtle, but you can try extremes to figure out what each curve will do. Don't be afraid to experiment!

Step 3 — Flatten
Once you are happy with your colour correction you need to flatten your image: cmnd/ctrl+e or menu-->layer-->merge

Step 4 — Channels
We are back to one layer.
Now we duplicate this layer cmnd/ctrl+j or drag your layer into the 'new layer' icon. While the new layer is selected, we will inspect the colour channels.
Do you see your colour channels? If not go to Window-->Channels

Step 5 — Channel Contrast
Here we are going to enhance the contrast of the picture by exploring each individual channel. Which channel is going to be our problem channel?
You guessed it... The BLUE channel.
Compare all channels by clicking on the R, B, or G layers in the channels palette and you will see that the blue channel will show the least contrast and the red channel will show the highest level of contrast. Therefore we will use the 'apply image' command to replace the blue channel with the red channel.

Make sure that the blue channel is selected. Image-->Apply Image
Refer to the image for the settings.

Let's click back on the RGB-channel and we see that everything is goofed up, it all looks funky pinky.

We select the 'Layer Blending Modes' drop down in the layers palette and select 'Luminosity' --> now everything looks beautiful again. This is because the luminosity blending mode only allows the contrast to change, and discards the colour of the layer.

flatten your image again: cmnd/ctrl+e or menu-->layer-->merge

Step 6 — More Contrast!!
Now lets boost the contrast in all of the individual channels.

Duplicate your layer once again. Inspect your channels and you may wish to also apply one of the layers on top of the others with the apply image command again. After, we will apply some curves directly to the individual channels. To do this simply select the channel you wish to operate on and press cmnd/ctrl+M to open the curves dialogue. Pay attention to the histogram in the back. In order to make more contrast we need to bring the curve in to be steeper where the majority of the action is on the histogram. It should be an "S" curve, which is considered a typical contrast curve. This may take some practice to get used to, but its worth it. The picture will probably look quite wacky once you return to the rgb channel, so switch to luminosity and ... voila. Now, press cmnd/ctrl+e or menu-->layer-->merge

Step 7 — Increase the contrast in the highlight areas
Duplicate your Background/Layer TWICE, then hide the top layer by clicking the little eye on the left of your 'Layers Palette'

Important: We talk about contrast. - Colour will not be effected here!
With the middle layer selected we are going to apply image again Menu-Bar-->Image-->Apply Image
This time we apply the RED channel. Check off 'INVERT' then hit okay
Change your layer blending mode to overlay.
Then go to -->Filter-->Blur-->Gausian Blur'
The setting for the gaussian blur will be determined by the picture, but it will usually be quite high. Remember we are only targeting the highlights. In the sample image you will see the benefits from this move in the the clouds mainly, but also in the rock formation on the left.
Next you will make the top layer visible again and change the blending mode to 'darken', this will allow the middle layer to only show through the highlights. On some images you may want to lower the opacity of the darken layer.

Step 8 — Merge visible
Now we will merge visible --> shift + cmnd/ctrl+e or menu, layer, merge visible
WOW. the picture is really starting to look great!!

Step 9 — Shadow Highlight Adjustment

Let's do a shadow/highlight to give an extra punch to the image.
Only do this if there are significant shadows and/or highlights, if it doesn't look good after or makes no different hit undo. Goto image-->adjustments-->shadow/highlight
The suggested settings are general settings that seem to work with most images and are known as 'rule of thumb'. You can save these as your defaults if you wish.

Step 10 — More Contrast?
Repeat step 5 to get some more clarity if you choose.

Step 11 — How's the colour now?
After all of that we should re-examine the colour and perform step 1 once more if necessary.

Congratualations! We have made it through a fairly intense colour and contrast workflow. This may seem quite lengthy now, but it actually quite a fast workflow, and should serve to develop your colour analysis significantly. For more on the LAB colour space and similar workflows, refer to the work of Dan Magulis.

Our presenters, for this meeting, are Nigel Faeron of Junction Design & Communication (http://www.junctiondesign.ca/) and Juergen Weiland (http://www.flickr.com/photos/juergenweiland). Their program will be a “hands on” tutorial demonstrating the processing of one photo from start to finish in Photoshop. It is suggested you bring along your laptops and power cords so you can follow along during the process. In this way you will get the most from the demonstration. The program will be approximately 45 minutes.

NIGEL FEARON
Nigel is a graduate in graphic design, but found his love for the field while he was in real estate, designing advertising for an entire company and selling homes. He has a fresh perspective, with a youthful professional flair. With a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for innovation, Nigel brings a fierce determination for excellence to the team. Nigel is self-taught in compliant coding in xhtml and css, is now utilizing javascript, and hopes to jump into Ruby on Rails if there is ever a free minute! He loves photography, plays guitar to break the stress, and always tries to get a laugh out of people.

JUERGEN WEILAND
A recent Graphic Design graduate (McKenzie College, Moncton, NB), Juergen Weiland has also accumulated more than two decades of experience in the fields of sales, marketing and management. Past positions in his native Germany included that of insurance salesman, music school office manager and performing artist representative. Juergen's design activities began with the creation of event posters and evolved to include promotional materials for the artists he represented. Following his move to Canada in 2003, Juergen co-founded the award winning Chocolate River Conservatory of Music where his artistic eye and high quality standards are evident in both the school's interior design and its marketing materials. Juergen has always loved photography, and with attending the Focus Camera Club he is looking forward to learn a lot more about it.

On Thursday, April 17th, our presenter will be Clarence Nowlan (www.photoatlantic.com). Clarence is an Honorary Life Member of the Focus Camera Club having served the club in many capacities. He is always willing to share his vast knowledge with our members. He is also an active member and presenter in the Photo Guild of Nova Scotia. His presentation will be mainly on the topic of "Lightroom, the Library and Develop modules" and his workflow with images brought into Lightroom and then exported to Adobe Photoshop CS3. The duration will be 1hr or so.

Clarence Nowlan

Born in New Brunswick freelance photographer Clarence Nowlan showed his first visual arts interest in pencil drawings and painting at an early age and gradually changed to photography as a means of expression. Ever since his first purchased his 35 mm camera in 1969 he has developed a keen interest (if not an obsession) for photography.

He is an accomplished and award winning photographer having won medals and many awards from the Canadian Association for Photographic Art and the Photographic Society of America. In 2000 The Canadian Geographic Magazine published his winning image for being the top winner in the "Color Category" in their national annual photography competition.

His photographs have been published in: Camera Canada Magazines, Canadian Geographic, Airlines Magazine, and Saltscapes Magazines, to name a few; also in two historic books entitled: "Rockport Portraits" 1989, of which he is the author and "Rêves de Vissionaire", Édition d'Acadie 1999; plus one autobiography book entitled: "Embellir", Les Éditions Doiron, 2003.

Some of his prints have been on exhibition at the World Chess Festival in St. John in 1988, The Moncton Museum 2000, The Saint John Museum 2001, The Moncton City Hall 1996, The Beauséjour Corporation 1997 & 1998, Joe Moka (solo) 1999, and the Moncton Public Library. Also some of his photographs are in an exhibition called "The Petitcodiac: A portrait of a River and its Voices" which is presently on a national tour organized by the Moncton Museum.

He has given numerous audio-visual slide presentations to local camera clubs and naturalist clubs. He has also given instructional presentations and audio-visual presentations to the Camera Canada College, The Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia College in Halifax, The Focus Camera Club of Moncton and the Truro Photo Club. Clarence has also served as a judge in National and International photographic exhibitions and competitions.

A naturalist at heart, Clarence has used his photographic skills to interpret the natural world around him through his sensitive use of light and form. He sees photography as a natural means of communication and personal growth and expression. Through his photography, he inspires love for all living organism and the need for their preservation.

Imagemakers Photography Club of Truro will host the first Atlantic Camera Conference on April 19th in the Forrester Hall lecture theatre on the NSCC campus. The Atlantic Camera Conference is the annual meeting of the Atlantic Zone of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art. The presenters are Andre Gallant of New Brunswick and Dale Wilson of Nova Scotia, two of Atlantic Canada's leading professional photographers.

ANDRÉ GALLANT is a professional photographer who specializes in travel photography and works throughout the world. His new book for Key Porter books "Photographing people at home and around the world" is now available in fine bookstores. "Destinations"& "Dreamscapes" are now available through his web site: www.andregallant.com. He co-authored Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image with Freeman Patterson, and together, they teach one week photography workshops in their native New Brunswick. André is a regular contributor to Photo Life, and his work has been published in Canadian Living, Canadian Gardening, Canadian Geographic, Doctor's Review, Elm Street, Gardening Life, en Route, Our Canada, Outdoor photographer, and Vous. He was the photographer for the illustrated books Winter, The Great Lakes and Seacoasts, all written by Pierre Berton. He has received several National Magazine awards. His clients include: Kodak, Tourism New Brunswick, Graphique de France. His work is licensed worldwide through Getty Images and Iconica.

DALE WILSON is a professional photographer based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Growing up at his family's farm in the rural community of River Hebert, N.S. gave Dale a love and understanding for the land and nature. Dale joined the Canadian Military at a young age, and then wanting to pursue a career as a photographer, in 1990, he resigned from the military. He joined PHOTO Digest, later to become PHOTO Life, as a contributing editor in 1993 and regularly contributed to that magazine until 2000. He has written in excess of 60 photography-based articles for a variety of trade magazines. In 1994 he received a contract as a contributing artist with Masterfile, and most recently began contributing to Getty Images. His work has appeared globally in countless, books, magazines and advertising campaigns. Dale has given presentations on photography across Canada and the United States. He has just completed his fourth book, and was a co-author of the highly acclaimed A Guide to Photographing the Canadian Landscape with Daryl Benson. Dale is now a regular photo columnist for Outdoor Photography Canada Magazine, the first Canadian national outdoor photography magazine of its kind.

The conference will include a short (30 minute) business meeting of the CAPA Atlantic Zone and will conclude in the afternoon with a field trip to explore the photography of the wonderful waterfalls of Victoria Park. The conference is open to the public . The cost is $35.00 for CAPA members, or $45.00 for non-members, payable at the door.

A common issue among photographers is the quest for "nice" or "good" pictures. Often this results in technically good images that are weak in emotional content. They look nice, are well composed, have nice colours, etc. but beyond that, don't engage the viewer in any deep or meaningful way. We all do this. Sometimes we just don't have any particular feeling about the subject. Maybe we were just enjoying the graphic design in the subject. But we should also spend more time communicating with our images. I consider it a personal mission to encourage people think more carefully about what their images are saying, to engage their heart and emotions in the process of image making, to express their feelings such that the viewers can feel the message and understand the story.

I'm not looking for more pretty pictures, but ones that engage the emotions of the viewer. I'm thinking, in particular, of pictures that convey something about the human condition, or about something about the world that concerns us now.

I'm looking for photographs with meaning that goes beyond the obvious. I'm looking for images that communicate, tell a story, grab your emotions, reveal the hidden side of something, make the viewer think, or think in a new way, help the viewer understand issues they might not go out of their way to find on their own. It doesn't have to be one of the "feel good" emotions but neither are they rules out. Watch out for pictures of babies or animals that are only cute without going deeper. It doesn't have to be a people picture. It isn't necessarily photojournalism or a news photo. Abstracts, pictures of babies, or pictures of garbage are all OK as long as they convey a feeling, message, story.

It is not only important that the photographer feel the emotion at the time of image making, but the viewer must also be able to receive that feeling or message without the need for clever titles, hints, or montage effects. If the viewer gives you a blank look and you feel the need to say "I guess you had to be there" then you haven't created the feeling in the viewer. In other words, it has to go beyond expressing a feeling. The feeling must be conveyed to the viewer.

Let's suppose you are at the Petitcodiac River, and you find the mud disgusting and you think somebody should do something about it, and you make a picture to convey that feeling. But then, the viewer sees it and says "Wow! Look at all that beautiful mud". You could say your success rate would be rather low in that case. So you must also strive to get across your message without misunderstanding.

I won't place any restriction on the image format (slides, prints, digital) as long as it can be seen by the group at the club Christmas party. I will leave this up to the club to decide what is practical.

I won't place any time limit on when the image was made - it doesn't have to have been in the past year. However, due to limited technology we will have to skip any pictures made in the future. The idea or concept in the image must be your own and not copied from someone else.

On Thursday, April 3rd, our presenter will be Focus Camera Club member, Tony Boudreau (http://tonyboudreau.zenfolio.com/ ). Tony will be discussing Portraits.
I plan on showing my studio work and a brief intoduction into portraiture. Maybe showing some different setups for lighting and the results.
I got my 2nd SLR camera about 9 years ago and really was fascinated with light and different results it showed. I started off like lots of people and did landscape and nature work, and enjoyed that but wanted more. So I tried Macro and well there we go, the artist flare was set off. I still shot nature but never a tree as a tree or that it was macro and multiply exposures of different things that got me to play with light. Five years ago I got my first model and that was it, Portaiture was the thing for me. I slowly started to build up my studio and did different stuff with with that. I mostly shoot for models portfolios and websites. I do family stuff, but mostly work in the fashion type industry with goals of a fulltime photographer for a magazine.

We will also be presenting Photo Essays by our members. The essays should be about “one song long” (3-5 minutes), of slides or digital and the more contributors the merrier. It’s time to get started on your presentation and everyone is expected to bring one. The club contest will be “Ice and Snow”.

On Thursday, March 20, our presenter will be, Maurice Henri (http://www.mauricehenri.ca/). “The outline of my talk is the personal development and approach of the creation process of photographic arts. In other words "seeing"”. His presentations are always visually exciting, informative and inspiring.
Maurice was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. He has also lived in, visited and photographed all the Atlantic Provinces, where, he says, “each province inspires its own gold”. He has explored each photographic mine with equal curiosity and enthusiasm. He has devoted a large part of his life cataloguing those unique and unforgettable images. The result of his devotion to the beauty of our region is now archived for life.
He has been creating Stock, Commercial and Portrait photography professionally since 1988. He also hosted and produced “FOTO”; a photography television series featuring education segments and interviews with prominent photographers. Sharing his knowledge with others since 1992, his “Learning Photography Programs” are a very important part of his photographic vision.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“A room filled with art is a room filled with thought”.
Every moment of every day we capture images with our eyes. Most of these fleeting
moments filter through and are forever lost. Some linger a while longer, enhancing our lives.
I want to bring a moment of quiet reflection to the viewer, a pause in time, a moment of
peace, a bit of beauty. I love the Earth and am deeply moved by the beauty and colours of nature.
Mainly, my work is about catching the mood and feel of every moment in creating the photograph. I believe that most interesting art occurs on its own around us. It doesn’t need alteration or enhancement. My assignment is to capture its natural beauty.
I believe that the power of the photographic image can open the heart and change people’s view of the world. A good portrait reveals more than the outward appearance of the subject, it unveils the sitter’s individual situation, inner life and inner longings. It also tells a story of the relationship between subject and photographer. It conveys what the photographer sees, feels and believes.
I am committed to promoting, expanding and sustaining photographic arts in Canada.

On Thursday, March 6th, our presenter will be Verna Poirier. Verna will present a Digital Slide show of her fall trip to Ireland which includes the "Ring of Kerry" and the "Wicklow Way". Verna has been to many places in the world, including, Australia; Mt Kilmajaro; Africa; Machu Picchu; Peru; Galapogos Is; England & the American Southwest to name a few.Verna is a Past President of the Focus Camera Club. Besides all this Verna enjoys biking and is an avid hiker and takes an active role in Search and Rescue. She is new to digital photography. We know you will enjoy her presentation.
The club contest will be “Contre-jour”. Contre-jour, French for 'against daylight’, refers to photographs taken when the camera is pointing directly toward the source of light. An alternative term is Backlighting.
